The honest answer is a range, not a number: most used iPhones stay genuinely usable for five to seven years from launch. What matters for a wholesale order is which of those years are still ahead of the unit you are buying today.
Total service life is the first owner's cycle plus the second owner's. Across major markets, industry trackers put smartphone replacement cycles at roughly two and a half to four years. A device handed on at year three therefore commonly serves another two to three years before it becomes a parts donor.
Software support is the hard limit. Hardware rarely dies on a schedule; it degrades, and the owner decides when the degradation stops being acceptable.
Every pre-owned iPhone carries a software clock and a hardware clock. The software clock is set by Apple's compatibility list; the hardware clock is set by battery wear, display condition and cumulative mechanical damage.
| Generation | Launched | Software clock | Practical runway in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 8 / X | 2017 | Major updates ended around 2022 | Legacy markets and parts only |
| iPhone XR / XS | 2018 | Last major release around 2024 | One to two years, price-sensitive markets |
| iPhone 11 | 2019 | Still on the current major release | Two to three years |
| iPhone 12 | 2020 | Current release supported | Three years and up |
| iPhone 13 | 2021 | Current release supported | Four years and up |
| iPhone 14 / 15 | 2022–2023 | Current release supported | Five years and up |
Verify the current compatibility list on Apple's support pages before you commit to a model mix; that list moves once a year and it decides which apps your buyers can still install.
Apple rates iPhone 15 and later batteries to retain 80% of capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles. Earlier generations were rated at half that. The doubled wear budget changes how long a unit stays inside a clean Grade A band, and it partly explains why newer pre-owned stock holds value better.
For older units, a battery replacement is the single cheapest way to add one to two years of service life, and it costs far less than a screen or board repair. How that service line works for trade partners is covered in our guide to battery replacement for B2B partners.
The iPhone 11 through 13 range sits in the sweet spot: current software support, ample parts supply, and price points that still clear a margin in budget markets. The iPhone SE line plays the same role at a lower entry cost. Devices from the XR and XS generation still move where buyers prioritise price over app support, but they are entering their final stretch.
Read the runway, not the age. A five-year-old top model with a fresh battery and a clean housing can outlast a three-year-old budget model with a tired cell and a worn display. Grade decisions should follow that logic; the vocabulary is set out in our grading systems reference.
